How to Install Motorcycle Mufflers

If you own a motorcycle, one of the coolest aspects is how easy it is to customize it to your taste, and one of the easiest customizations you can make is with the muffler. Of course, there are many reasons you might want to replace your bike’s muffler:

  • Customization

  • Improve performance

  • Replace the broken muffler

  • Lower the weight

  • Upgrade your bike

No matter what your reason is for wanting a new muffler, this guide will go over everything you need to know. Grab your OEM ATV parts and tools and get started.

Motorcycle Mufflers

Before You Get Started

There are a few things you need to get straight before you get to work. Most importantly, you need to research your state’s laws. Vehicle exhaust is strictly regulated to protect the environment, so you need to be absolutely sure that the modifications you want to perform are legal. These regulations vary from state to state, so you need to do your own research.

Second, you need to see if the OEM bike parts you purchased have any special instructions. Muffler replacement is incredibly simple and straightforward, but some special mufflers come with special requirements. They may attach in a strange way or require different maintenance. It likely will not be much, but you need to know if the manufacturer has anything they want you to know. And finally, don’t forget to get your tools ready before you dive in.

Installation

The best mufflers and exhaust systems are incredibly simple to install. As you would expect, the first step is to remove the old muffler. Take a close look at it to see how it is attached. It will likely be fastened with a connection joint and a muffler bracket, and you will need to loosen both. Whatever is holding it in place, be sure to support the muffler as you loosen it so it does not fall and damage either the muffler or the exhaust system. If your muffler has been in place for a long time, it may be difficult to get off. A good, hard yank may be necessary, but double check that there is nothing still holding it in place first.

The thing that makes muffler replacement so simple is that you can basically just pop off the old one and slip on the new one. While this is easy to understand and execute, it does not mean you do not have to be careful. The exhaust system is fragile, after all. Note how manufacturer designed the new muffler to attach and then carefully tighten it in place. You are very nearly done.

Finishing up

Before you hop on your bike and hit the road to test out your new muffler, a few final touches can make a big difference. First, give your muffler a good wipe down, as any oil from your hands may become permanent stains once the bike is on. Be sure to check for leaks as well, but be careful not to burn yourself. With that taken care of, you should be ready to give your new and improved bike its first test drive.
