Oppo already showcased their under-display camera technology at MWC Shanghai, and we know vivo and Xiaomi also have prototypes. It appears another Chinese manufacturer is planning to join the game – Huawei has just filed patents for the user interface and how the area over the camera will be used.
Some of the solutions for the UDC area
It appears that Huawei has at least half a dozen solutions for the area. One of the images reveals it will show the time you are on a call, while another will be the Camera Mode (as pictured with AI Mode). There can also appear info about you dialing when you get out of the Caller app.
Another interesting thing these patent files reveal is the actual position of the front-facing shooter. While Oppo has put it in the center of the top side, Huawei is planning to tuck it in the upper left corner where the current cutout for the Honor View 20 and Huawei nova 5i sits.
We don’t know if this Chinese manufacturer has a working product or is it simply protecting one idea from getting snatched by others, as usually happens with patents. Only time will tell, but by the looks of our weekly poll from last week, most of you want the tech as soon as possible.
